I became aware of this epic ride the week before retiring from the Royal Australian Air Force after 33 years of service. As a veteran of the Iraq and Afghanistan Wars, I have witnessed the best and worst of humanity yet that pales into insignificance when compared to the ‘hell on earth’ my great uncles endured in World War I at the Battles of Bullecourt and Fromelles where they fell.
So I’m going to honour their sacrifice and the tireless work of Legacy who have supported my relatives, friends and the families of veterans since 1923 by giving the 2018 Tour de Legacy a crack in November. The ride will take us on a journey to the battlefields of the Western Front over 8 days and 900 kms of English, French and Belgium Pavé.
Attending the Centenary Memorial Service at the Australian National Memorial, Villers-Bretonneux on Remembrance Day will be an extremely emotional and cathartic experience as I pay my respects and gratitude to Private Albert Arthur Treglown, 22ndBattalion and Private Arthur Charles Mowbray, 7th Battalion, and all the men, women and animals that served our great nation in times of war and conflict.
